About this piece
This crocodile started as a challenge to make a realistic print-in-place flexi croc, and it grew into something I like much more: a word toy that teaches braille through play. The crocodile's five body segments each rotate a full turn on ball-and-socket joints. Every segment carries one braille letter and one raised capital print letter on its back and on each flank, so braille readers and print readers learn side by side. Roll all the segments to their backs and the croc spells its first word; roll them all left or all right for the second and third. The default words are Danish: bider, gaber and halen. The braille is real signage-grade braille to ISO 17049, and it stays exactly that size no matter how large you print the croc, because the OpenSCAD source scales the body while holding the braille and all joint clearances at their true dimensions. And it is still every bit a crocodile: a hinged jaw that opens and closes over interlaced teeth, ball-jointed legs with clawed and webbed feet, a swinging neck and finned tail, and carved scute texture along every segment. I make three designs: the braille word croc with the twist mechanism, a braille name croc, and a plain articulated flexi croc without letters. Everything prints in place, fully assembled.
Why I made it this way
- I put one braille cell and one raised capital on every rotating segment, so both reading worlds share one toy.
- I use real signage-grade braille to ISO 17049, at true size no matter the print scale.
- I let the flat faces settle against the table, so the letters line themselves up without springs or catches.
- I kept it a proper crocodile, with a hinged toothy jaw, clawed feet and carved scutes.
- I designed all three crocs end to end in screen-reader-accessible OpenSCAD.
What arrives
If you choose a printed option, your crocodile arrives fully assembled with every segment rolled once and the jaw freed. Want custom words on the segments, or another colour? Contact me before ordering.
Printing and finishing
I print each crocodile to order in Denmark, flat on its belly in one piece. I free the mechanism, check every letter face and pack it safely.
Returns and digital files
Printed items have a 14-day right of withdrawal, plus your 2-year complaint right.
