About this piece
After my braille crocodile I wanted to make my own version of the toy every Danish home seems to own: the classic wooden monkey with the long arms and hook hands that hangs from a shelf. Mine wears round tactile glasses, hangs from anything its hooks can catch, and spells words in braille. The funny story: in Danish, braille sounds like Brille, which means glasses. You can tease someone who wears glasses by calling them a brilleabe, a glasses monkey. Someone teased me with brailleabe, so I took the challenge and made one. The monkey's body is a string of six plump beads, and every bead rolls a full turn on a ball-and-socket joint. Each bead is a twelve-sided barrel, so the flats click into place every 30 degrees by themselves. Nine of the twelve faces carry one braille cell and one raised capital, so braille readers and print readers learn side by side. Roll all the beads backs up and the monkey spells its first word, GUSTAV by default, and each further click reveals the next of nine preset words, from abekat to bog. The braille is real signage-grade braille to ISO 17049, held at true size at any print scale. And it is still every bit that monkey: long arms and shorter legs on deep captive ball joints, hook hands and feet that catch a shelf edge, a branch or a necklace chain, a swinging head with big flat ears and raised tactile glasses, and a curled tail that doubles as a hanging hook. Everything prints in place, fully assembled.
Why I made it this way
- I gave the twelve-sided beads a natural 30 degree click, so whole words appear one click at a time.
- I fit nine preset words on one monkey, GUSTAV plus first Danish reading words, all changeable in the source.
- I use real signage-grade braille to ISO 17049, at true size no matter the print scale.
- I kept the hook hands, hook feet and curled tail, so it hangs from shelves, branches and necklaces.
- I gave it raised tactile glasses, because this monkey is a brailleabe.
What arrives
If you choose the printed option, your monkey arrives fully assembled with all six beads freed and clicking. Want your own name or words on the beads, or another colour? Contact me before ordering.
Printing and finishing
I print each monkey to order in Denmark, flat on its belly in one piece. I free all the joints, check every letter face and pack it safely.
Returns and digital files
Printed items have a 14-day right of withdrawal, plus your 2-year complaint right.
